Portrait painter 18th century8/1/2023 ![]() At the same time, portrait miniatures gained in popularity. Through her portraits and history paintings, she became one of the most successful artists of 18th century Europe. The German painter Johann Zoffany (17331810) spent much of his career in England and painted this self portrait shortly after his arrival in 1760. Swiss painter Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807) was one of the greats amongst the Neoclassical artists. The attribution to eighteenth century French artist, Louis Tocque (Paris 1696-1772) was established with the cleaning and restoration of the painting in 2004. John Russell (17451806) was the most prolific pastelist in eighteenth-century Britain. Miniature landscapes, genre scenes, and portraits of saints became increasingly popular. The frame was reduced slightly in format to fit the Tocque.
