![]() ![]() Michael likes that people might mistake Hanna for his mother, and when they go on a four-day bike trip, they register as a mother and son. Michael wants to know more about her, but she only tells him basic information: Her first name is Hanna, she worked at a big factory and then joined the army, and now she’s a 36-year-old tram conductor with a 17-year-old son. Hanna listens intently and comments on the texts. He reads her a range of books, from Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey to Stendhal’s novel The Red and the Black (1830). Michael and Hanna have many sexual encounters, and she likes it when he reads out loud to her. After, they have sex, and Michael falls in love. He helps her bring up coal and gets dirty. ![]() He can’t stop thinking about her, so he returns to her apartment. Hanna catches him looking at her, and Michael runs away. In her apartment, Michael watches her iron her underwear and spies on her as she changes. Michael doesn’t plan to see the woman again, but his mother thinks he should bring her flowers and thank her. He throws up near an apartment building, and an older, unnamed woman cleans him up and takes him home. In Part 1, Michael Berg, a 15-year-old boy in West Germany, is sick with hepatitis. The study guide refers to an eBook version of the 2008 Vintage International edition, translated by Carol Brown Janeway.Ĭontent Warning: This guide summarizes and discusses suicide, statutory rape, the Holocaust, and Nazi brutality, which feature in the source text. The book touches on themes like secrets, memory, and feelings, as well as motifs like guilt. It chronicles the intense affair that begins when Hanna is 36 and Michael is 15. The novel is also, however problematically, a romance. In 2008, the book was adapted into a film with the English actress Kate Winslet playing the role of Hanna Schmitz.Īs Hanna is a former Nazi on trial in West Germany, the book qualifies as historical fiction-it fictionalizes real-life events. Translated editions of The Reader won several international prizes, including the Grinzane Cavour Prize in Italy and the Prix Laure Bataillon in France. The German newspaper Abendzeitung named the book Stern des Jahres (Star of the Year), and it was also awarded the 1998 Hans Fallada Prize, given to works that address social or political issues. Two years later, an English version arrived in the United States, and it became a bestseller and a selection for Oprah's Book Club. Law professor Bernhard Schlink published The Reader ( Der Vorleser) in Germany in 1995. ![]()

Cyrex offers over a dozen different arrays, ranging from wheat/gluten reactivity to chemical reactivity. Cyrex LabratoriesĬyrex is one of the most highly reputable companies offering IGG food sensitivity lab tests, though the utility and accuracy of IGG tests in general are widely debated. They also do neurotransmitters and heavy metals testing. They have other hormone tests like saliva, blood spot and serum. They are a competitor to DUTCH & use many of the same testing methods. One of their most popular tests is a dried urine testing similar in nature to DUTCH. ZRT has been around for over 20 years and offers a wide variety of hormone tests for men and women. They offer everything from basic blood panels to stool tests, neurotransmitter tests, and more. Vibrant labs is a newer lab on the scene but has gained popularity through their large offering - they’ve chosen to go wide, as opposed to deep with their test selection. Their OAT test, meanwhile, is another hallmark functional medicine stool test that’s usually ordered early on. Their toxins tests are usually ordered later in a person’s health journey, if initial treatment plans and protocols aren’t working and practitioners suspect an environmental trigger as a root cause. Great Plains is best known for their Organic Acids Test, and mycotoxin and environmental toxins testing. They’ve been around since the 90s, and their most popular tests are their micronutrient test and their cardiometabolic panel. Spectracell is a smaller and more specialized lab, and they have their own patented technology for their micronutrient testing. One of their keystone tests is their heavy metals test - they process more heavy metals tests in a month than their competitors process in a year. Russian linguist7/30/2023 ![]() ![]() This is attributed to a gradual phasing out of indigenous language teaching both in the cities and rural areas while regional media and governments shift exclusively to Russian. Other languages in the Volga region recorded similar declines in the number of speakers between the 20 censuses the number of Mari speakers declined from 254,000 to 204,000 while Chuvash recorded only 1,042,989 speakers in 2010, a 21.6% drop from 2002. Between 20 the number of Udmurt speakers dwindled from 463,000 to 324,000. On 10 September 2019, Udmurt activist Albert Razin self-immolated in front of the regional government building in Izhevsk as it was considering passing the controversial bill to reduce the status of the Udmurt language. Twelve of Russia's ethnic autonomies, including five in the Caucasus called for the legislation to be blocked. The International Circassian Organization called for the law to be rescinded before it came into effect. The law was also seen as possibly destabilizing, threatening ethnic relations and revitalizing the various North Caucasian nationalist movements. Although the "hand-picked" Duma representatives from the Caucasus did not oppose the bill, it prompted a large outcry in the North Caucasus with representatives from the region being accused of cowardice. Protests and petitions against the bill by either civic society, groups of public intellectuals or regional governments came from Tatarstan (with attempts for demonstrations suppressed), Chuvashia, Mari El, North Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, the Karachays, the Kumyks, the Avars, Chechnya, and Ingushetia. The later "language crackdown" in which autonomous units were forced to stop mandatory hours of native languages was also seen as a move by Putin to "build identity in Russian society". The law came after a lawsuit in the summer of 2017, where a Russian mother claimed that her son had been "materially harmed" by learning the Tatar language, while in a speech Vladimir Putin argued that it was wrong to force someone to learn a language that is not their own. When the bill was still being considered, advocates for the minorities warned that the bill could endanger their languages and traditional cultures. This bill has been likened by some commentators, such as in Foreign Affairs, to a policy of Russification. ![]() On 19 June 2018, the Russian State Duma adopted a bill that made education in all languages but Russian optional, overruling previous laws by ethnic autonomies, and reducing instruction in minority languages to only two hours a week. Today, 97% of the public school students of Russia receive their education only or mostly in Russian, even though Russia is made up of approximately 80% ethnic Russians. In Russia, however, the dominating status of the Russian language continued. Russian lost its status in many of the new republics that arose following the 1991 dissolution of the Soviet Union. With president Vladimir Putin’s signing of an executive order on 3 July 2020 to insert the amendments into the constitution, they took effect on 4 July 2020. įrom 2020, amendments to the Russian Constitution stipulate that Russian is the language of the "state forming people". There are over 100 minority languages spoken in Russia today. ![]() There are 35 languages which are considered official languages in various regions of Russia, along with Russian. Of all the languages of Russia, Russian, the most widely spoken language, is the only official language at the national level. ![]()

Pushing your six sticks the other direction creates a greater angle between the launching stick and the base. This results in a cotton ball aimed more upward than forward. Moving the stack of six sticks closer to the launching cup makes the launching stick lie flatter. In the case of your catapult, the cotton ball probably flew higher and farther. Bending farther means more energy gets stored in the stick, and when you let go, all this stored energy is converted into energy of motion, so the cotton ball flies through the air at a higher speed. Maybe you felt you needed to exert more force or work harder to bend the stick farther. Pushing the stick down farther takes more effort from you. Most of this energy transfers to the cotton ball, which shoots through the air. When you let go, this energy is released and converted to energy of motion. When you bend your stick, you load your launching stick up with energy. Do you get similar results each time? Is what you observe what you expected? Can you explain why?ĭid you see your cotton ball fly higher and farther when you pushed you launching stick farther down? ![]()

Maquette game length7/29/2023 ![]() The central mechanic, and most eye-catching feature, is the perspective shifting gameplay. The timeline of events is too compressed to give the characters full depth, but the voice work helps fill in some of the emotional gaps that the four-hour story rushes through. Fringe star Seth Gabel plays his part too as the quiet, “sensitive” guy who just can’t figure out the right way to communicate. Bryce Dallas Howard is the project’s big name and she properly dials up her annoyance level as pet peeves morph into full on shouting matches. It also helps that developer Source Decay locked down some Hollywood talent to bring its lovers to life through voice-over. It all feels a little paint-by-numbers by the end, though I suppose most doomed relationships fall into that same routine as well. There’s a coffee shop meet-cute, an awkward ‘I love you’ exchange, a slow stream of communication issues, and a ceremonial break-up to cap it all off. Maquette’s story is a familiar relationship saga. While its romantic sob story feels a bit boilerplate and it doesn’t fully commit to some of its most intriguing gameplay ideas, Maquette is a short, sincere game that captures the puzzling road to closure in the wake of a messy break-up. Published by Annapurna Interactive, the new indie tells a familiar break-up story through mind-bending puzzle mechanics, Hollywood voice acting, and a splash of moody indie folk. Maquette is about reliving that journey with a bird’s-eye view of the situation that only comes after it’s over. On the flipside, big red flags can look like minor issues … that is, until they pile up to form a mountain of irreconcilable differences. In the early courtship stages, even the smallest details become grand romantic gestures that feel larger than life. 3) Graphics and Audio: Emotions Colourised and Vocalised Story: Painstakingly SculptedĪt the core of Maquette is a story about quantifying love.Relationships are a series of shifting perspectives. Graceful Decay aims to transport the player into this whirlwind romance and hopes to stir player emotion along the way. Truthfully, whilst playing I found myself reminiscing about previous relationships. ![]() The power of Maquette is that it draws out your memories and aligns them with Michael or Kenzie’s. Player and protagonist become intertwined. Maquette is a 4-8 hour puzzle game that is best played in a couple of sittings. The narrative supports the game length, working hand in hand to achieve a fine balance between thought-provoking gameplay and emotional set-pieces. The strength of Maquette’s narrative is in being experienced. The story is a thoughtful exploration of love and all of its blemishes. The narrative and world of Maquette are built to make you fall in love with the game within the first few hours, and that is when this game is at its best. ![]() As the player learns who Michael and Kenzie are, it is difficult to not become invested in their relationship, the depth and power of the story-telling leads to an emotional conclusion that feels earned. ![]() What begins as a simple love story, slowly evolves into a powerful message about living in the past. The world of Maquette is full of locations from the couples past I was floored at how neatly woven the narrative and gameplay were, one could not be half as effective without the other. The narrative boasts stellar voice-acting from real-life couple Bryce Dallas Howard and Seth Gabel. ![]() These high-budget actors may appear surprising to find in an indie game such as this, but the decision pays off. Voice acting is crucial with this type of story-driven game and the duo bring Michael and Kenzie to life with an emotional resonance that lasts long after the credits have rolled. ![]() |
